Folklórico is a style of dance that encapsulates local Mexican folk cultures. Spanning different regions and states, folklórico is characterized by its ballet-like movements, mesmerizing choreography and extravagant costumes.
Raíces de mi Tierra is UC Santa Barbara’s folklórico group. The club was founded 35 years ago and is a completely student-funded and student-run organization, a testament to the strong cultural identity and dedication in the club.
“It’s a really great comunidad, everyone helps each other out to make sure no one falls behind,” fourth-year biology major and Raíces de mi Tierra Co-Chair Sarah Rodriguez said.
The group does performances on campus and the Santa Barbara area throughout the year. Their annual spring showcase acts as a culmination of the group’s rehearsal, as they work towards this performance during the entire year. No experience is required to join.
“Our whole mission is to teach and educate anyone who is willing to learn about our beautiful, rich Mexican culture through dance,” Rodriguez said.
