UC Regents approve new instructional building at UC Riverside

The UC Regents approved a plan for a four-story instructional building at UC Riverside  on March 20,  according to an article from UC Riverside News. Construction will begin this summer and is expected to finish by summer 2026.

Titled the Undergraduate Teaching and Learning Facility, the building spans 100,700 square feet and costs $156.3 million. The facility will have a seating capacity of 1,700  and include two lecture halls, 19 mid- to small-sized classrooms, six biology labs, four chemistry labs and a dance studio.

There will be walkways around the building linking to student housing in the north and the heart of campus in the south.

“Students of all different backgrounds pursuing different interests will be in the same space and be seeing these other activities going on around them,” campus architect Jaqueline Norman told UC Riverside News. “I think it will be one of the more exciting learning environments on campus because of that.”

UC Davis commemorates 30th anniversary of campus Egghead sculptures

UC Davis honored the 30th anniversary of the installation of Egghead sculptures — created by late professor and artist Robert Arneson — with special events on April 4, according to UC Davis News.

The cream-colored oblong sculptures, which populate five different sites on campus, are popular among students, according to UC Davis News. Some of them have specific traditions or lore, such as students rubbing the Bookhead sculpture for luck, according to UC Davis News.

An interactive website detailing the Eggheads and their history is live. There is also a museum exhibition titled “Hatched: The Making of Robert Arneson’s Eggheads” at the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art.

“Robert Arneson would be stunned and delighted that the Eggheads are garnering so much attention,” Sandra Shannonhouse, Arneson’s widow, artist and a graduate of the university said at a museum event, according to UC Davis News.

“It is the students themselves and the Davis community who made them their unofficial mascot of this campus.”
