Después de dos años de dedicación y demasiadas conferencias de Zoom, estamos orgullosos de anunciar la creación de La Vista, la nueva sección en español del Daily Nexus, con el objetivo de convertirse en un espacio más inclusivo y representativo de la comunidad hispanohablante de UC Santa Bárbara.

El Daily Nexus, conocido originalmente como El Águila, comenzó a imprimirse en 1930 y ha sufrido muchos cambios desde entonces. En 2015, UCSB fue designada una institución que atiende a hispanos; sin embargo, la cobertura de Daily Nexus no refleja esto precisamente. Servimos a la población estudiantil, pero en este momento, eso solo se extiende a la población que habla ingles en UCSB e Isla Vista. En el año escolar 2021-22, los estudiantes latinos y chicanos representaron el 27% del cuerpo estudiantil de UCSB.
Con el fin de satisfacer las expectativas de una institución al servicio de los hispanos, buscamos diversificar nuestra cobertura de medios para incluir a las comunidades hispanas y latines, proporcionando traducciones al español de los artículos de Nexus, así como nuestro propio contenido original en español, abarcando noticias locales, arte y cultura, y más.
Nosotros, los creadores de La Vista, crecimos viendo populares programas de televisión en español como Univisión y Telemundo y reconocemos la importancia de estos programas para las comunidades que nos rodean. Al venir a UCSB y hacer parte del Nexus y de la población hispana y latine, sentimos que este elemento de comunidad hacía falta. Entendemos la importancia de los medios de comunicación hispanos, no solo a nivel nacional, sino a nivel del campus universitario. La incorporación de los medios españoles en el Daily Nexus tiene un propósito con dos fases: diversificar nuestra cobertura mediática, pero también crear un hogar para aquellos que anhelan el sentido de comunidad.
After two years of dedication and many Zoom calls, we are proud to announce the creation of La Vista, the new Spanish section of the Daily Nexus that strives to produce Spanish articles, with the aim of making our newspaper more inclusive and representative of UC Santa Barbara’s Spanish-speaking community.
The Daily Nexus, first known as The Eagle, began printing in 1923 and has undergone many changes in the 99 years since. In 2015, UCSB was designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) — however, the Daily Nexus’ coverage does not accurately reflect this. We serve the student population, but right now, that only extends to the English-speaking population of UCSB and Isla Vista. Yet, during the 2021-22 school year, Latine and Chicano students compromise 27% of the UCSB undergraduate and graduate student bodies combined.
In order to match the expectations of a HSI, we seek to diversify our media coverage to include the Hispanic and Latine communities by providing Spanish translations of Nexus articles as well as our own original content in Spanish, ranging from local news, arts and culture and more.
We grew up watching popular Spanish broadcast programs like Univision and Telemundo, and we recognize how important the programs are for the communities surrounding us. Coming to UCSB and being a part of the Nexus as well as the Hispanic and Latine communities, we felt that this element of community was missing. We understand how important Spanish media is, not just on a national level but on a campus-wide level. Incorporating Spanish media into the Nexus serves a double purpose — diversifying our media coverage while also creating a small piece of home for those longing for community.
