Isla Vista Foot Patrol deputies deployed naloxone for an overdose victim early Thursday morning.
The victim, a 20-year-old woman, was “unresponsive” when police arrived at a residence on the 6600 block of Trigo Road just after midnight, according to Daniel Calderon, Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office (SBSO) deputy.
“The reporting party told Dispatchers that the woman was unconscious and not breathing and it was suspected that she had suffered a drug overdose,” Calderon said in a press release sent out close to 2 a.m. on Thursday.
Police found prescription opioid medication near her and subsequently deployed naloxone. The woman then began to breathe on her own and police detected a “weak pulse.”
She has since been transferred to a hospital for further treatment.
Naloxone hydrochloride, known as Narcan, is commonly used in overdose situations. Since the implementation of the SBSO naloxone program in April 2017, the sheriff’s office has utilized naloxone more than six times in I.V.
