“World’s Greatest Dad”

So the Oscar nominations came in Tuesday. As usual, they were all for boring, safe, generic movies. Almost nothing edgy or off the beaten path made the cut. Just the same old, same old and Meryl Streep’s 14th nomination. Movies don’t get nominations based on quality, and they certainly don’t win on their own merit. Winning Oscars costs millions and millions of dollars.

Hard to Find Venue Is Back in Business

It might not look like much from the outside, but the Hard to Find Showspace is a local legend. Bigger than beloved venues like the Biko Co-op or the Pink Mailbox, the music venue run by brothers Josh and Tim Eymann will undoubtedly attract hordes of local music enthusiasts from all over Santa Barbara (more accessible parking than in I.V. doesn’t hurt). The showspace re-opened for business last month, and has already assembled an impressive lineup. I saw Pixies frontman Frank Black play a sold-out performance before an enthusiastic crowd there just last weekend.

Word Farm Benefits Amateur Screenwriters

It was barely 9 a.m. on a Saturday, but the halls of the new Social Sciences and Media Studies building were abuzz with chatty students munching on cereal and pastries. Welcome to Word Farm.

Who Will Win Super Bowl XLIV?

Who said fate wouldn’t bring these two almost perfect teams together? In one corner, the perennial AFC Champion Colts, a team that has everything going for them except being from Indiana. In the other corner, the newly ordained NFC Champion Saints, a team that has fruitfully ridden the waves of Hurricane Katrina to a place in our hearts as America’s Team.

All Thai’d Up

Let’s start with some chicken satay. Delicious, tender and smoky, smothered in peanut sauce. Shall we proceed to some steamed rice, maybe some piping hot lemongrass and coconut soup? Pad Thai? Yes, please. It’s a classic, the yardstick by which all other Thai dishes are measured. For dessert, fried bananas and coconut ice cream. Yes, ladies and gentleman, that’s right. You guessed it. It’s Thai food time. But now that you’ve got that craving, where to go?

A.S. Allegedly Trashes Weekend Retreat Villa

A UCSB Associated Students retreat ended in thousands of dollars in damage to a private villa rented with student fees, a Los Osos property owners’ representative said.

An Attempt at a Shout Out

With limited space today, the Weatherhuman would like to make a quick shout-out to a fan. C.A., whose full name I will not share for reasons of anonymity that I myself understand, you’re ridiculously kind in your adoration. Unfortunately, I don’t take compliments well. But nice try.

Lack of Transparency Signals a Lack of Respect for Student Body

This type of behavior on the part of elected officials is unacceptable. Associated Students is not just some private club, although these events imply an attitude to the contrary. They are an elected body charged with representing the entire undergraduate student body.

Army Execs Support Queers

The U.S.’s top two senior defense officials called for a repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” yesterday in an effort to move toward permitting openly homosexual individuals to serve without contest in the United States Military.

Simple Soundbites Pervade Politics on Both Sides

In the 21st century, small parts of the American public have worked very hard to put together a strategy to smear the current president. They compare him to Hitler, display him as a monkey, say he’s trying to kill grandma, chant that he is a fascist and organize marches against him.
