Third-year UCSB transfer student Grant Gaines Goodwin died on April 12 in his home in Brentwood, CA. He was 25 years old.

Goodwin, a communication major, had not been enrolled at the university since Fall Quarter of 2009. Although a coroner’s report has been filed, the Contra Costa County Police Dept. will not release the cause of death pending a final toxicology report.

Roommate Logan Campbell, who had known Goodwin for about two years, said he was an amazing person with rare and special personality traits.

“I will remember his laugh for years to come,” Campbell said. “He had an incredible wit. He really touched a lot of people’s lives and he was always the life of the party.”

According to Campbell, Goodwin and three of his friends moved to the Santa Barbara area at the beginning of the academic year.

“All four of us moved out here to get a fresh start,” Campbell said. “We wanted to try something new so two of us enrolled in Santa Barbara City College and the other two at UCSB.”

Grant is survived by parents Bill and Valerie Goodwin. Goodwin’s family could not be reached for comment as of press time.
