Voluptuous Virtual Voyages

I got laid this Winter Break. Trust me, this was to everyone’s advantage; all play and no lay makes Jenni a raging psycho. Last year, I stormed my hometown with a permanent stink-eye, obsessively reviewing the names on my shit list. If anyone dared mutter the words “Happy Holidays,” I pointed a gaunt, un-manicured finger […]

Strapped for Cash, UC Weighs Options

Boxed in by looming budget cuts, University of California officials may look out-of-state for answers to the financial crisis at hand.

Big West Preview — UC Santa Barbara

After a rough-and-tumble preseason that saw two losses by a combined margin of three points along with a loss while hosting then-#1 North Carolina, the UCSB men’s basketball team was looking forward to a clean slate with the opening of Big West conference play. However, after a pair of hugely disappointing losses to Long Beach and Riverside, the Gauchos have dug themselves a hole they did not expect to be in.

UCSB Ponders Online Readers

Big West Preview — Pacific

The first week in January always marks two things: the beginning of Winter Quarter and Big West conference play in basketball. This year’s Big West looks to be especially interesting given the way the preseason unfolded and the similar strength of schedules and records of the teams. The obvious favorites are the preseason #1 and #2, Cal State University of Northridge and UCSB. However, another school that should not be taken lightly and looks to make a significant difference in this year’s conference is the University of the Pacific’s Tigers.

Big West Preview — Cal State Fullerton

Coming into the 2008-09 season, the Cal State Fullerton Titans were ranked fourth in the Big West. Last year they tied for the regular season conference championship and made it to the elite eight of the NCAA tournament. But after opening this season with a 6-7 record, Head Coach Bob Burton, who is in his sixth season with the Titans and has compiled a record of 92-60 in his five previous seasons, does not believe they deserve that ranking.

Big West Preview — Long Beach State

What a difference a year can make. After finishing eighth in the Big West last season with an atrocious 6-25 overall record including only three wins in conference, a much improved Long Beach State team (7-7 overall, 2-0 in the Big West) has made great strides this season as it looks to return to prominence. Already with one win more than they had last year at the midway point in the season, Long Beach appears primed to leap back into Big West tournament contention.

Big West Preview — UC Irvine

Becoming a consistently winning program is tougher in college sports than anywhere else. Student turnover rates are high, and often a team is forced to field young and inexperienced squads if they graduate a large senior class. Thus is the case for the UC Irvine men’s basketball team. The Anteaters only have two seniors, and the young squad suffered some serious growing pains early on with an apocalyptic 2-10 preseason record.
