Opponents of Prop 8: Take heart. I know that this seems like a crushing blow. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed. But I would also be lying if I said I was extremely surprised. The movement for civil rights is an uphill battle. We are fighting a long history of inequality and discrimination.
It is not something that changes overnight, but is a long, drawn out process. It is often discouraging and always painful, not just for those whose rights we fight for, but for everyone who stands with them. But remember, progress cannot be stopped. Remember also that eight short years ago Californians approved a ban on gay marriage with a whopping 69 percent majority.
As of this article, Prop 8 has passed with only 52 percent. It is disappointing that a majority of voting Californians still oppose gay marriage. But those numbers are shrinking, and it is only a matter of time. As long as we keep hope in our hearts and determination in our spirit, we will come out victorious, for we are on the side of justice and liberty for all.
Supporters of Prop 8: I do not know your reasons. More to the point, your reasons do not matter. You have set back the rights of the people. ALL people. You have marginalized an entire group. But you have not won. I lack the words to fight with you, because I know it does not matter. Progress is coming. Steel yourselves.
