Violence is not the necessary outcome of oppression. Many other people and groups in history have been subject to persecution and have been denied common freedoms. While some of their leaders have turned to violence, leaving future generations to inherit deadly wars, others have used nonviolent protest with great success, like Martin Luther King, Jr. or Gandhi.

Common sense tells us that, whether or not a particular UCSB student, or even the majority of Palestinian children, has seen Hamas’ children’s programming, the very fact that Hamas is funding and producing such programming shows its true intent: to violently destroy Israel. This is its stated position, and such a stance cannot be tolerated.
