Editor, Daily Nexus,

The following is an open letter to the UCPD:

I would like to offer my sincere thanks for all of your efforts to keep our campus community safe. Without fine officers such as you, this campus would be very badly off.

That being said, your bicycle safety program as of late is a winner. I commend all of you on keeping order by specifically devoting increased time and resources on citing those menaces to society who dare ride their bikes over a sidewalk or, more brazenly, ride their bicycles through a crosswalk – even an empty one. These perpetrators should be dealt with in the most severe ways possible and I am glad you are taking officers out of their vehicles and putting them on bicycles to hide in the bushes to capture these despicable delinquents in the act and put an end to these crimes once and for all.

Nevertheless, I am not sure how I feel about the approximately 30 percent fine reduction for criminals who attend a “bicycle safety” class. It seems like they would be better off by being put into handcuffs and tazed several times in front of their peers – maybe at the library. This of course would only happen after they pay the full $125 to $130 fine.

Honestly, I am proud to be a part of the UCSB community with officers like you watching over us. To know that all campus issues involving personal safety, sexual assaults, speeding, dangerous driving, thefts and all other traffic problems have been eradicated certainly warrants such an increase in bicycle enforcement. It really gives me a sense of pride and well being to know that, finally, UCSB will be safe from those dangerous students who dare enter the campus on their bicycles. I’m sure you guys already do it enough, but give yourselves another pat on the back for a job well done.
