Associated Students Legislative Council spent the majority of their brief 45-minute meeting yesterday discussing the upcoming A.S. spring election.

During the meeting, Leggies also discussed the funding of Porn Nation, an event put on by Real Life – a campus crusade for Christ ministry – that discusses the negative effects of pornography in society. In addition, the council came to a consensus on the final draft of the spring election ballot.

Real Life member and third-year business economics and religious studies double major Mike Motia requested $1,500 to help fund the event.

“It’s going to be a really big deal,” Motia said. “America spends more money on porn each year than on foreign aid.”

However, since Real Life did not follow the procedure and submit a request form to A.S. Finance Board earlier in the week, the council was reluctant to fund the group.

Off-Campus Rep Samantha Nevels said Leg Council should refrain from funding the group in order to respect A.S. policy.

“Spring Quarter is our most tight quarter budget-wise, and if they didn’t get the paper in on time, then it’s not fair,” she said.

However, Off-Campus Rep Gina Fischer said that, since the Residence Hall Association had given the group $100, Leg Council should do the same.

“It’s going to be a huge event and it’s important to intervene on some level because RHA is co-sponsoring them,” Fischer said.

Despite her protests in favor of funding the group, the council voted not to allocate any funds to Real Life, with five members in favor, 11 against and four abstentions.

The board also looked over the final draft of the A.S. spring election ballot, which includes a newly revised A.S. constitution. The group spent most of the discussion correcting grammatical errors.

Fischer also addressed her concerns over a remark made about Open People’s Party presidential candidate Jared Goldschen. She said it was unfortunate that an opponent scorned Goldschen during Monday’s presidential debate for the one time he served as a proxy for her.

“I didn’t know that Jared serving as a proxy for me would hinder his performance in the election,” Fischer said. “If I did, then I wouldn’t have done it.”

Also on the subject of Tuesday’s debate, Off-Campus Rep Rachel Weight aired her grievances about the Daily Nexus article that covered the event.

According to Weight, the Nexus reported that A.S External Vice President of Statewide Affairs Bill Shiebler held up a sign that read, “That’s a Lie,” during Goldschen’s response to a question regarding the importance of A.S. experience regarding the position of A.S. president.

“That was a lie and was slanderous on the part of the Nexus that Bill Shiebler held up that sign, because it wasn’t him,” she said.

However, several witnesses, including Goldschen, confirmed that Shiebler was, in fact, the person holding the sign.
