The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Dept. is investigating a suspected murder-suicide that occurred Monday afternoon in Goleta.

At approximately 4:20 p.m., deputies from the Goleta station responded to 363 Moreton Bay Lane, off of N. Fairview Avenue, said Sgt. Chris Pappas. Upon entering one of the apartments, deputies found the body of an elderly woman lying on the bed. She had a gunshot wound to her head.

After further searching the apartment, deputies found an elderly man, still alive, with an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, Pappas said. The man was taken to Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital and is in critical condition.

Pappas said the managers of the apartment complex called the police to report the incident.

“It had been quite a while since they had seen the couple,” he said. “They did an inspection of the crime scene and then called the sheriff’s department to notify us.”

When deputies arrived, there was loud music coming from inside the apartment. Pappas said the music could have muffled the sounds of a gunshot.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Dept. is withholding the identities of the victims until the next of kin can be notified.
