Editor’s note: In Wednesday’s story, “Isla Vista Attack Claims Life of SBCC Student,” it was incorrectly stated that Bradley Jones died at Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital. He passed away at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital and a memorial was not held Tuesday night. Also, the suspect, Slava Christopher Olsen, was not a Santa Barbara City College student.

The Nexus regrets these errors.

An assault Saturday night in Isla Vista left one Santa Barbara City College student dead and another being held at the Santa Barbara County Jail.

Twenty-year-old Slava Christopher Olsen was arrested Tuesday afternoon for assaulting 19-year-old Bradley Jones late in the evening of Feb. 28, Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Dept. spokesman Chris Pappas said.

Pappas said Jones was walking with a small group of friends on the 6600 block of Sabado Tarde Road when they encountered a group of approximately 20 individuals. Members of the two groups had “a brief verbal exchange,” Pappas said, before two men, including Olsen, broke off from the larger group to follow Jones’ group. Olsen punched Jones in the face, causing Jones to fall backward and hit the victim’s head on the asphalt. Jones sustained “very serious head injuries,” Pappas said.

Jones’ roommate Derek Hansen said Jones passed away Tuesday morning at Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital, and a memorial was held that night at a friend’s house. As of Tuesday night, Pappas said he was unable to confirm that Jones had died.

Olsen is being held on $250,000 bail.
