This weekend, UCSB students and local residents will have a chance to view preliminary sketches and give input on the plans for the new Isla Vista Community Center.

On Feb. 7, the Isla Vista Recreation and Park District (IVRPD) will hold a workshop in Isla Vista Theater at 10 a.m. that will include a presentation on the current plans for the project and proposals for the center. The IVRPD, I.V. Youth Projects, the I.V. Teen Center and One Generation are working together to build the center.

Logan Green, Associated Students external vice president of local affairs and IVRPD board member, said the workshop will help project designers align their plan for the center with the needs of the community.

“We have lots of ideas that have been thrown out there, and we want to set some priorities,” Green said. “People will have a chance to say what they want to see and how they want to see it done.”

Green said the center, which will be located at Estero Park, should be ready to open in about three years. The project is currently undergoing early design and construction permit stages, which should take at least a year.

In addition to the new center, the preliminary plans call for a makeover of Estero Park that would include an 8,000-foot skate park and a regulation-size soccer field.

Green said it is important for people to attend the workshop so they can influence how the center is designed and what programs it will offer.

“Isla Vista’s never really had any services like this. This is going to mark a big change as to what there is to do in the community,” Green said. “[The center] will lift the community up.”
