Editor, Daily Nexus,

Apathy molests all of us at some point, but motivating yourself off your ass would likely make your life more fun and meaningful. SB is filled with great people, places and things to do. I had a housemate not come back to SB this year because he was not happy here. Well, I wish he would have quit impersonating an ostrich with his head in the sand for two years without getting involved in anything except fashion and working out. I would like to offer some advice to anyone looking for more from their experience at UCSB:

Go outside! Enjoy the beaches, weather and local treasures such as the Monarch grove and waterfalls in our local mountains. If you want an opportunity to learn about and check out more places, a campus group exists to help. Regional Experiences offers free field trips almost every weekend. Meet them on Mondays at 7 in HSSB 1224 or email Bob at .

Enjoy community events as they come up. For example, next Friday in Anisq’ Oyo’ park (the big one by Silvergreens), four bands (Budge, El Jefe, The Messengers and Stir Fry) will play between 2 and 8 p.m. in a fun and educational event co-sponsored by the I.V. chapter of Surfrider Foundation. Events such as this, Earth Day, block parties and more provide a positive atmosphere to hang out with your friends and to meet new people.

Get involved with one or more campus organizations. Our campus has incredible student activities, so pick your interest and check out the list on the Office of Student Life webpage. Personally, I love the ocean and like to have fun, so I chair the group that caters to that. The I.V. chapter of Surfrider Foundation meets every Wednesday in Snidecor 1653 at 7:30 p.m. before going to Woodstock’s for surf videos. Contact for more info.

Whatever your passion is, follow it and you will reward yourself and your community.
