The Thomas Fire first began on Monday night north of Santa Paula, according to the Ventura County Fire Department. It had burned across approximately 230,500 acres toward Ventura County by Saturday and is 15 percent contained.

UC Santa Barbara students currently have “no reason to worry,” Mike Eliason, Santa Barbara County (SBC) Fire Department spokesperson, said Saturday afternoon.

The Thomas Fire has burned into Santa Barbara County, the Santa Barbara County Fire Department announced at approximately 3 p.m. Saturday. The fire entered the county near Divide Peak, north of Carpenteria, and is moving west.

The Santa Barbara County Fire Department expected the fire to move in this direction.

The fire began burning into Carpinteria early Sunday morning and severe fire weather will increase the fire’s growth, according to the Ventura County Fire Department.

Gov. Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency for Santa Barbara County on Thursday at approximately 9:30 p.m., saying the Thomas Fire is causing “conditions of extreme peril” to people and property.

Isla Vista residents lost power for more than three hours on Monday night, and outages continued through Tuesday. The UC Santa Barbara campus and Isla Vista community then lost power more than 10 times early Sunday morning after strong winds pushed the Thomas Fire into Santa Barbara County.

At the request of Ventura County, UC Santa Barbara converted its large gym into an evacuation center on Tuesday.

Chancellor Henry T. Yang announced that all classes would be canceled Thursday and Friday after students expressed dissatisfaction with the university’s delayed response to the Ventura County fire. The announcement came shortly after a petition to cancel classes gained 3,000 signatures in one hour.

Yang said Friday that final exams would be “flexible” after students created another petition asking the university for more support for students during the fire.

Yang announced Sunday that finals week would be canceled and postponed until the week of Jan. 8. Winter Quarter will now begin on the week of Jan. 16.
