UC Santa Cruz will host the 2013 North American Economic Science Association Conference this weekend. Experimental economists will spend two days presenting research findings and discussing a variety of economic issues — including behavioral economics and economics related to political science and psychology research. The conference is co-sponsored by the UC Santa Cruz Economics Department and the department’s Learning and Experimental Economics Projects lab.

A research team headed by UC San Diego research physicist Alexei Kritsuk published a study in Great Britain’s research journal, Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. The study provides support for a theory that relates the observed properties of molecular clouds to the formation of stars known as Larson’s Laws. Furthermore, its findings suggest that, rather than three separate laws, the properties of supersonic turbulence alone explain the creation of molecular clouds.

Randy Schekman, a UCLA alum and professor of molecular and cellular biology at UC Berkeley, recently won the 2013 Nobel Prize in the category of Physiology or Medicine for his work in discovering how proteins are secreted and transported in human cells. Schekman is the seventh UCLA alum to win a Nobel Prize and the first to win a prize in Physiology or Medicine.

The Fielding School of Public Health at UCLA recently established a new center to promote knowledge of health issues and well-being through collaborative efforts with partnering media organizations and producers. The efforts promote storytelling, effective reporting and interactive new media content. By allowing writers and filmmakers to connect with experts of the Fielding School, the center, named the Global Media Center for Social Impact, hopes to inspire individuals to conduct further research on population health.

UC Irvine researchers recently received a $9.5 million grant from the National Institute on Aging to continue a study on dementia in seniors above the age of 90. The study, which has been in the works since 2003, intends to explore the causes and symptoms of dementia — a disease that plagues roughly 40 percent of adults in the 90-plus age group.

The Institute of Medicine, a nonprofit branch of the National Academy of Sciences, recently elected two professors from UC Davis, in honor of their significant contributions to the field of scientific research and public service. The elected individuals include medicine and rheumatology professor Nancy E. Lane and epidemiology and disease ecology professor Jonna Mazet.
