It was a different kind of search and seizure on Saturday: Rescue crews searched for a man with a seizure.

On Jan. 25 at 1:56 p.m., the UC Police Dept., Santa Barbara County Fire Dept. and paramedics were dispatched to Campus Point on the report that a surfer was having difficulty in the water.

Capt. Charlie Johnson of the Fire Dept. said a 19-year-old man suffered a seizure while surfing with his friends. While someone phoned 911 dispatch, the man’s friends managed to get him onshore. Rescue personnel met the man immediately and found him to be conscious and alert.

The ambulance could not access the site of the incident, so rescuers had to employ a Stokes Basket – a regular rescue stretcher with a low-pressure balloon tire underneath so that two rescuers can push a patient with little effort. Johnson said rescuers pushed the patient and stretcher up the side of the rocky cliff to the rescue vehicle.

The man was on his way to the hospital within 30 minutes, Johnson said. His condition appears to be stable.
