Leo Lydon, an 18-year-old UCSB student from Riverside, was found dead in a San Nicolas Residence Hall room Monday morning. The cause of death is unknown.

Campus police responded to a 911 call from the residence hall at 9:42 a.m. and discovered Lydon unconscious and unresponsive, a UCPD statement said. Paramedics pronounced him dead on the scene.

The first investigation showed no signs of foul play and the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Dept. Coroner’s Office is investigating the case as a natural death.

Although the coroner’s office conducted an autopsy Monday, they will wait for a toxicology report to determine a cause of death, Sheriff’s Dept. Lt. Jim Dollar said. The process could take anywhere from one to eight weeks, Dollar said.

By late afternoon, students had written messages and left flowers for Lydon on the door of his first-floor room. Resident Director Alfred Day said the building was still in shock and that Lydon’s friends were meeting to console each other or calling family.

“Everyone says he was a nice guy, a humorous guy,” Day said. “At this point, [students] are more with each other, with family. Since it’s the first week of the quarter, people are more likely to call home.”

Over 100 of San Nicolas’ 400 residents went to an informational meeting with Day and several counselors.
