UC Santa Barbara’s Student Engagement and Leadership office announced that applications for five memorial scholarships are open until April 21.
The memorial scholarships will apply for the next academic year, and are awarded in remembrance of five students whose “lives were cut short under tragic circumstances,” according to a press release from Student Engagement and Leadership (S.E.A.L.).
The scholarships are as follows:
The George Chen Memorial Scholarship for Outstanding Compassionate Service is in honor of computer science major Chen who died on May 23, 2014. He was in his third year. The scholarship is $2,000 for one year.
The David D. Propp Memorial Scholarship is in honor of biological sciences major Propp who died on November 9, 2012. He was in his fourth year, and active in campus ministry. Propp’s family established the scholarship to memorialize him and “assist future UCSB students who, like David, are guided by their faith,” according to S.E.A.L. There will be two $1,500 scholarships issued for one year.
The David Wang Memorial Scholarship is in honor of computer engineering major Wang who died on May 23, 2014. He was in his third year. The scholarship is $2,000.
The Veronika Weiss Memorial Scholarship is in honor of pre-financial and mathematics and statistics major Weiss who died on May 23, 2014. She was in her second year. The scholarship is $2,000.
The Gay Dowling Young ‘67 Memorial Scholarship is in honor of class of ‘67 alumna Dowling, who graduated with a BA in sociology. The scholarship is $500.
