Suspect in Friday Night I.V. Stabbing Arrested

A 19-year-old Isla Vista resident was arrested Saturday after allegedly stabbing a UC Santa Barbara student Friday night, the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office reported.
Police arrested Cyrus Rocky McClain on Saturday afternoon after he went to the Isla Vista Foot Patrol station for questioning, according to an Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office (SBSO) press release.
The stabbing of the 24-year-old-female student occurred at approximately 11 p.m. on the 6700 block of Del Playa Drive
in I.V. on Friday. Authorities blocked off the intersection of Del Playa Drive and Camino Del Sur following the incident.
An investigation revealed that the suspect did not know the victim, but had engaged in “an altercation with victim’s boyfriend” earlier in the night when McClain trespassed on the property, according to the release.
The victim was stabbed in the pelvis and transferred to Cottage Hospital shortly after medical personnel arrived at the scene.
The victim is recovering from non life threatening injuries, SBSO spokesperson Kelly Hoover said.
McClain is in custody at the Santa Barbara County Jail on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and bodily harm inflicted during the commission of a felony. He is being held on $350,000 bail.
SBSO sheriff’s deputies and UC Police Department officers worked “throughout the night” to locate and identify the suspect, according to the release. Several search warrants were issued in order to locate the suspect.
Of course he’s an out of state sbcc recruit. When can we as a community put our foot down and force sbcc to cater to the community instead of out of district, out of state, and out of country students? Enough is enough.
The UCSB/Isla Vista community did stand up to SBCC when the Daily Nexus REFUSED to endorse Measure S back in 2014. But yeah, MORE needs to be done! These assholes, they’re becoming the norm.

I wish you a speedy recovery. Sue SBCC, seriously, this guy and many of the other criminals that move to IV are out of district SBCC students. There’s really no reason for a community college student to be living in IV. SBCC advertises to and enrolls thousands of out of district students every year and forces the community do deal with the negative impacts. SBCC is acting very irresponsibly and needs to be held accountable for the actions of the students that they bring to our community. UCSB students should not have to deal with this stuff.

If I was a UCSB student I would be outraged. Why is SBCC allowed to keep recruiting criminals to come live in IV with UCSB students? If something doesn’t change UCSB students will continue to get murdered (Elliot Rodger), stabbed (this guy) and have their reputation tarnished by the countless criminals SBCC brings into IV.

No defense from me of the perpetrator. Innocent until proven guilty is our way here in the US. McClain is entitled to a fair trial. Infinite sympathy for the victim and sadness for her having to endure her horrible injury.

Attention UCSB students! Let’s all move to the Mesa next to SBCC so we can party with the SBCC students, use the SBCC gym, study at the SBCC library and occasionally commit major crimes against SBCC students. Sounds crazy but this is exactly what SBCC is doing to UCSB. What makes it even crazier is the fact that SBCC is supposed to be a COMMUNITY college.
Some things never change – I was at UCSB from 1995-1999 and SBCC students caused most of the trouble in IV. Not that UCSB students don’t cause trouble too. I never understood why someone would “go away” to JC. Even more mind boggling is parents who would pay for their kids to “go away” to JC. Whether this gentleman has wealthy parents is unknown. But a soccer recruit? I can’t see a lot of elite athletes choosing to go to SBCC.
The main reason so many out of district SBCC students choose to go to SBCC is so they can live and party in IV, leach off of UCSB resources and basiscally pretend to be UCSB students without putting the work in. A community college should not have this impact. Some SBCC students claim they chose to go to SBCC to save money but that doesn’t make sense either because they are literally moving to an area with some of the highest rental rates and cost of living in the nation. You all have to remember 1 main thing here & that’s the fact that SBCC literally LIES to these “recruits” about their transfer rates. They also lie about their “sports program” prowess. Let’s all be honest w/ each other, the ONLY reason these out of district idiots are coming to SBCC is simply so they can party in Isla Vista. Did you guys know that SBCC has NO FRIDAY CLASSES?! Non local students take up most of the class spots. I know some local SBCC students who have taken 3, 4 or even 5 years to graduate because they could never get into the classes they needed.

Also, all of the news coverage claims my injuries were non life threatening. I lost half of my body’s blood. Was in and out of consciousness at the scene. He missed my femoral artery by millimeters, and severed my iliac vein. I needed 8 blood transfusions and almost lost my life multiple times according to every medical staff that’s interacted with me.
I am so sorry to hear that & you have my hopes for a speedy recovery. A stab wound in the pelvic/abdominal area is NOT a “minor” injury by any means. A lot can go wrong.
As a long time resident of Isla Vista (since 1987 to current), it saddens me to see this kind of thing & we ALL know where the blame squarely lays.

UCSB is a university, SBCC is a community college. They are different types of institutions. Community colleges are supposed to serve the local community and universities have a much broader outreach. Even though SBCC is a community college I would still bet that they have more out of state and foreign students than UCSB does. Apparently he was in a relationship with the girl and got into an argument with another gentleman over the girl. Somehow the knife was drawn and the female was inflicted with a stab wound protecting the other gentleman.
