A structure fire broke out at 6564 Del Playa Drive late afternoon on Sunday, leaving visible black smoke in the air.

All residents safely evacuated the complex before responders arrived, Santa Barbara County firefighters confirmed at the scene. One resident was sent to the hospital after being “shaken up” by the incident, county Battalion Chief Scott Alderete said.

Three engines and one truck responded to the incident at approximately 5:09 p.m. Firefighters climbed onto the roof and drilled into the complex with a chainsaw to reach the source of the fire.

Responders have not yet determined the cause of the fire, Alderete said.

A crowd of about 30 people watched the incident from a distance.
