A 33-year-old Goleta resident allegedly assaulted a homeless man Friday near the Del Playa Drive and El Embarcadero Road beach access point.

According to eyewitness reports, Brian Michael Pipkin punched, kicked and slammed a rock into the 54-year-old victim’s head around 3:55 p.m. Pipkin is currently being held in the Santa Barbara County Jail on $50,000 bail with charges of felony battery and assault with a deadly weapon.

Deputies apprehended Pipkin at Pelican Park on the 6500 block of Del Playa shortly after the incident. Although Pipkin’s mug shot reveals several abrasions on his face, a press release from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office did not mention if they were obtained during the assault, his arrest or an unrelated event.

The victim arrived at the hospital with multiple lacerations on his face. According to the press release, the motives for the crime are unknown.
