The victim of yesterday afternoon’s train crash has been identified as local high school student Humberto Moreno.

Moreno died after being struck by an Amtrak train near Fairview Avenue in Goleta. According to reports, the 16-year-old may have been listening to an MP3 player with headphones at the time of the incident.

The conductor reported that she saw three to four people making inappropriate gestures and throwing rocks at the engine just before the crash. The train was unable to stop immediately and, although the rest of the group managed to get out of the way, Moreno remained on the tracks.

The incident is being classified as an accident. However, the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Dept. is attempting to locate the other people who were with Moreno at the time of the crash.
