Local authorities responded to six burglaries and a medical emergency during the weekend, in addition to arresting a group of residents for counterfeiting money.

Deputy Freddy Padilla said the Sheriff’s Dept. detained four suspects after investigating the spread of counterfeit $20 bills in the area. Padilla said surveillance camera footage was used to catch the suspects.

“The investigating deputies were able to identify the suspects with video surveillance and vehicle descriptions,” Padilla said.

The suspects were charged with felony counterfeiting of money, conspiracy and burglary. Authorities expect more arrests will be made as the investigation continues.

While Sheriff’s Dept. investigators pursued the counterfeiters, the Isla Vista Foot Patrol responded to six burglaries throughout the weekend — all involving stolen laptop computers.

Two laptops and an iPod were stolen from a residence on El Nido Lane Friday night. Suspects also stole a laptop from a residence on the 6600 block of Del Playa Dr. that night, entering through an unlocked bedroom window.

Thieves struck again Saturday night, stealing six laptops from a residence on the 6600 block of Trigo Rd. Again, the suspects entered through an unlocked door.

The Foot Patrol also received a call at 3 a.m. Saturday morning when a person on the 6700 block of El Colegio Rd. reportedly stopped breathing. When deputies arrived, however, the patient was breathing and had a pulse, but several intoxicated individuals were nonetheless busy giving the patient CPR.

“It was a silly call,” Padilla said. “I don’t think it’s a good idea to give CPR to someone when they’re breathing and have a pulse.”

There were also incidents of violent crime over the weekend. Officers stumbled upon a fight in a driveway on the 6600 block of DP at 1:30 a.m. Sunday. The clash involved two young men, and both were arrested.

Less than two hours later, deputies responded to a confrontation that nearly ended in a knife fight. A man on the 6500 block of El Colegio Rd. brandished a blade and challenged another man to a fight at 3 a.m. Sunday morning.

Only one report of vandalism was filed this weekend, regarding a vandalized vehicle mirror. No suspect has been identified.

Officers also handled a standard assortment of alcohol-related crimes, issuing four citations for public intoxication and five citations for people in possession of open containers. Four minors were also cited for illegally possessing alcohol.
