Editor, Daily Nexus,

Kara Hess’ column about Proposition 2 (“Face Facts on Farm Animals,” Daily Nexus, Oct. 30) made it clear how little she knows about Prop 2, a modest measure on tomorrow’s ballot.

Voting yes on Prop 2 will ensure farm animals aren’t trapped in cages slightly larger than their bodies. Not only does Prop 2 protect animals from cruelty, but it also safeguards the environment, fosters better food safety and protects family farmers. More than 100 California family farmers have endorsed Prop 2, along with United Farm Workers, National Black Farmers Association and the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, as have the Humane Society of the United States, the California Veterinary Medical Association, the Center for Food Safety and more.

Though it was difficult for Kara to defend confining animals in cages so small they can’t turn around, it’s easy for all of us to vote yes on Prop 2 tomorrow. By voting yes on Prop 2, we can stand by our belief that all animals, including animals raised for food, deserve humane treatment.
