Lois Capps has long been a friendly face to Gauchos. She has been a consistently strong presence on campus, always willing to speak in Storke Plaza and attend events in Anisq’ Oyo’ Park. She also regularly writes columns for the Nexus in her never-ending attempt to keep the students informed and up-to-date on current local, state and national issues. Her ties to the students are clearly strong and unbreakable.
Capps’ levelheaded approach to making decisions is exactly what we need, especially in the face of such a monstrous state, national and worldwide budget problem. Again, we can trust Capps to earn money for UCSB and public schooling across California because she has already worked on passing the largest increase in student aid since the 1944 G.I. Bill.
A nurse in the Santa Barbara School District for 20 years before entering office, Capps has long been an advocate of quality health care, especially for children. She is looking to reauthorize the State Children’s Health Insurance Program and has also negotiated legislation to fund stem cell research.
The war in Iraq is also an issue Capps has stood against since the beginning, which shows she has foresight and is willing to stand up for what she believes in.
