After taking care of business at home in a 6-1 victory over Eastern Michigan, the UCSB women’s tennis team begins its three-day Arizona road trip today in Flagstaff against the University of Northern Arizona.

The Lumberjacks (8-6 overall) are coming off a 6-1 loss against #57 Boise State last Sunday in Boise. NAU is a young team with only two seniors on its roster alongside five freshmen. Third-year Head Coach Kim Bruno is still trying to find a winning combination in her team, as in this season alone she’s fielded 13 different doubles combinations and has started 10 different players in six singles spots. Of those 10 players, only five have started at the same position for five matches or more. After 14 matches this season, freshman Orsi Golovics holds the best singles record on the team at 10-2 but has started at five different spots.

As for doubles, the Lumberjack duo of Amiee Oki and senior Stephanie Vallejos hold the squad’s best record at 8-4. Oki and Vallejos have started together at the first, second and third spots this season, but posted their best record by far in the two-spot, going 5-2. Golovics and fellow freshman Edit Suhajda form the only other doubles team with more than four matches played and will most likely fill the one-spot for Northern Arizona.

Saturday, the Gauchos (3-2) trek 117 miles south to Tucson, Ariz. for a match against #52 Arizona. The Wildcats (5-5) started the season 5-0 before receiving brutal beat downs from ranked opponents, losing to UCLA, USC, Florida International, Long Beach State and Sacramento State by a combined 28-5. Regardless of their current losing streak, Arizona fields the #60 player in the country in junior Danielle Steinberg who is 7-3 in top-ranked singles this year.

UCSB will finish off their tour of Arizona in Tempe on Sunday to face off against #18 Arizona State, who earned their first loss in eight games this season against #12 USC last Tuesday. Freshman phenomenon Kelcy McKenna starts in the second-ranked singles spot for ASU.

USCB begins their match against the state of Arizona today at 10 a.m. in Flagstaff.
