The Rec Cen got a little less bubbly last Friday when its outdoor hot tub was shut down due to corroded materials and rainy weather.

While the spa was operational off and on for the past several weeks, it was finally closed for repair when a screw on the pool’s light covering corroded and came loose, exposing some electrical wiring and rendering the pool unsafe.

According to Project Manager Karl Burrelsman, the hot tub is currently under warranty, and the university is working to contact Leon Construction, which originally installed the spa, for repair work.

The hot tub, which opened in May of 2006, is located near the locker room entrances by the pool area and available during normal pool hours when it is in operation. Students can visit the pool area from 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Saturdays, and 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Sundays.

The 16-by-10-foot spa can seat up to 17 individuals and cost $250,000 to build. Students financed the spa through the $60 per quarter fees they pay to the Rec Cen.
