Police cars crowded Sueno Road last night as officers detained an unidentified UCSB student, following an alleged hit and run on campus.

According to University of California Police Dept. Sgt. Dan Massey, dispatch received a call from the alleged victim of a hit and run in front of Student Health at around 5 p.m. yesterday evening. Officers matched a description of the fleeing vehicle to a car carrying four male UCSB students on the 6600 block of Sueno Road and surrounded the address with three squad cars.

After questioning the occupants of the vehicle, officers took the unidentified male driver into custody. He was not formally arrested, but was instead taken back to the station for further questioning and was shortly returned to the Sueno address.

Officer Matthew Stern said that police could not immediately charge the man because they had not witnessed the incident and were unsure about the details.

“It’s two parties and they all have a side,” Stern said. “That’s why the investigation is ongoing.”

The three other males in the vehicle refused to comment.
