1. UCSB’s own Campbell Hall will play host to two fascinating films in one night on Jan. 22. First up is “The Refugee All Stars,” about the titular group of musicians who make the journey from the refugee camps back to their homes in Sierra Leone, and the second will be “Amandla!” showcasing social protest music during the Apartheid period in South Africa. The screening for “The Refugee All Stars” is at 7:30 p.m. and for “Amandla!” is 9 p.m.

2. Indy! Indy! Check out local improv comedy troupe Improvability’s “Legends of the Hidden Temple” show in Embarcadero Hall at 8 p.m. on Jan. 18.

3. Sean Penn’s directorial masterpiece “Into the Wild” premiered last year to widespread critical acclaim. Featuring the fantastically talented Emile Hirsch, this film documents Christopher McCandless, who graduated from college, abandoned his large inheritance and began an odyssey that took him from the fields of South Dakota to the rapids of Colorado to the wilds of Alaska. It’s a must-see movie, and it’s screening at 7:30 p.m. in Campbell Hall on Jan. 23, thanks to Arts & Lectures.

4. According to gossipmongers, The Harvard Lampoon magazine named Paris Hilton its Woman of the Year. The celebutante is set to accept her award and make a speech at the Ivy League college on Feb. 6, just before her new film “The Hottie and the Nottie” is set to debut.

5. Katherine Heigl’s latest romantic comedy wrestles with the ancient art of standing by while your sister marries the man you secretly love. Gather up the girlfriends and check out “27 Dresses” after it opens on Jan. 18.

6. Cat Power fans rejoice. The singer-songwriter’s new album Jukebox drops on Jan. 22. Grab a copy and curl up with covers of everyone from Janis Joplin to the Allman Brothers Band.
