The University of San Diego was flawless Sunday, ending the UCSB men’s tennis team’s two-game win streak 7-0.

The #35 Toreros (12-4) are now on a four-game win streak and have won 12 of their last 13 games.

USD dominated from the start, sweeping the three doubles matches. UCSB (4-9) could only accumulate six points between the three doubles pairs. The closest doubles match came at #2, with UCSB senior Alex Anselme and freshman Anders Dalskov losing 8-3 to Torero juniors Pierrick Ysern and Oscar Plotnik.

“We played well on Saturday against Dartmouth, but came out flat in doubles play on Sunday,” UCSB Head Coach Marty Davis said. “The flat play just carried over to singles and we weren’t able to turn things around.”

The Gauchos did not fare much better in singles play. USD rested #1 singles and #9 Ysern, but the Toreros still had enough to hold off UCSB.

Junior Nick Brotman put up a fight at #2 singles, eventually falling 6-1, 4-6, 6-1. The only other Gaucho to win a set was senior Leo Basica.

“Leo has been playing confident, solid tennis of late,” Davis said.

Sophomore Elad Stern kept each set close, but fell 6-4, 7-5 at #5 singles. The rest of the Gauchos were soundly defeated.

The resounding loss to USD ended the little momentum UCSB had gained from its two-game win streak. It was the first match UCSB has lost at home this season.

After a grueling road trip through February where the Gauchos lost eight consecutive matches, all on the road, the team returned home to win the Big West opener against Cal Poly. UCSB followed the win with another against Dartmouth.

“We have a huge match coming up this Saturday against UC Irvine,” Davis said. “Winning that match will help us get the top seed for the Big West Tournament and is simply the biggest match of the year.”

The next Gaucho match will be Wednesday when San Diego State comes to Santa Barbara at 1:30 p.m. at the Rec Cen courts.
