In its season opener, the UCSB track team pulled off men’s and women’s victories in a tri-meet with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Westmont.

“It was our first meet of the year and it was in the rain,” junior sprinter Kylie McCuen said. “You never know what to expect, but we worked through it and did extremely well.”

Despite the poor weather conditions, the team managed to race most of the events and even experienced the breaking of a few personal records.

“You can’t let the weather distract you,” junior thrower Amy Haapanen said. “You have to give it all for your teammates.”

The UCSB women earned 182 points to annihilate CMS and Westmont, who finished with 82.5 and 65.5 points, respectively. The men’s team put up 158 points to 101 for CMS and 54 for Westmont.

“The meet was a good start to the season; as our only home game of the year, everyone preformed well,” junior distance Ben Armel said. “We have a lot of good things to look forward to.”

The weather affected two events, grounding the long and triple jumps.

Haapanen finished first in both shot put and discus; juniors Rebecca Richey and Danielle DeBeaubien took the top two javelin spots, respectively. Sophomores Heidi Nyberg and Jessica Horn finished in the top two vault spots, respectively.

For the sprinters, McCuen took first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.16 seconds in addition to winning the 200-meter dash. Sophomore hurdlers Stellamarie Hall and Lauri Schakett took first and second in the 100-meter hurdles, respectively. UCSB swept the top three in the 800-meter with juniors Lauren Christman and Lindsay Christman and sophomore Hadas Moser taking first, second and third, respectively. Sophomore Stephanie Rothstein finished the 3,000-meter in a personal record 10:14:51.

“Our athletes get the job done, and that is important,”
