Burglars kicked in the doors of the A.S. Isla Vista Tenants Union office at 970 Embarcadero del Mar over Winter Break and made off with $3,800 worth of electronics.

Lt. Sol Linver of the Isla Vista Foot Patrol said two desktop computers and one laptop were stolen from the Tenants Union office Wednesday, Dec. 29.

A Tenants Union employee who refused to give her name said the union has filed a claim with the UC Police Dept. and said that insurance is covering the cost of the stolen computers.

The Tenants Union is a group that aims to educate I.V. residents about their rights and responsibilities as renters. They also provide resources to students dealing with unfair treatment by landlords.

The office of I.V. LIVE, a group that offers entertainment every Saturday night as an alternative to the I.V. party scene, is located upstairs from the Tenants Union’s office. Linver said the I.V. LIVE office was burglarized on the same night that the Tenants Union break-in occurred.

Jennifer Caldwell, the producer of I.V. LIVE, said she does not think anything was stolen during the incident.

Linver said the IVFP has not yet determined whether the burglaries are related.

“That will depend on fingerprints and further investigation,” Linver said.

Linver said anyone who sees suspicious activity around the building should report it to the IVFP by calling 681-4179 or 681-4148.
