Soccer fans bid farewell this weekend to five seniors during the UCSB women’s soccer team’s final two home games of the year.

Seniors Jennifer Borcich, Cinthia Ruiz, Molly Martin, Randi Johns and Amber Squire were honored at Harder Stadium with flowers and hugs from family members while the fans applauded before the start of Friday’s game.

Pacific defeated the Gauchos (10-5-2 overall, 5-1-1 in the Big West) who had not lost a game in seven straight contests. Pacific (7-4-6, 3-1-4 in the Big West) put the only point on the board in the 78th minute of the game with a corner kick by sophomore Jennifer Smiley to freshman Mandi Van Dorn.

Santa Barbara dominated most of the match, but was unable to finish strong or produce any points.

“I thought we played well, maybe one of our better games of the year.” UCSB Head Coach Paul Stumpf said. “The post was our enemy tonight.”

Sophomore forward Allie Kueny knocked two shots into the post and one into the crossbar in the first five minutes of the second half. The Gauchos continued to be aggressive, but failed to connect with shot after shot narrowly missing their target.

Santa Barbara came back after the loss and defeated Northridge (11-5-1, 5-3-0 in the Big West) 1-0 in the second minute of overtime with a goal by sophomore midfielder Darci Gwartz.

“It was good to come back with a solid victory,” Gwartz said.

Ruiz received a red card, the first of three total cards given, for pulling down a Matador striker on a breakaway in the 59th minute of play. Gaucho defenders junior Katie Cooper and Northridge freshman Julie Hauserman each received a yellow card.

The game-winning goal was delivered off a pass from freshman Nicole Remmenga after Remmenga’s corner kick was deflected back out to her.

“She whipped off a great serve,” Stumpf said. “It got whipped around in there and knocked back out and she sent another serve right back into the six-yard box.”

The goal snapped a Gaucho slump of two scoreless games and placed Santa Barbara at the top of the rankings in the Big West.
