Editor’s Note – We’ve received a number of letters in response to Tawni Wold’s letter, “Friends are Free; Save Some Cash And Forget Sororities” (Daily Nexus, Oct. 5). The following letters are those responses, edited for space constraints.

Editor, Daily Nexus,

Many people mistakenly believe women such as myself, an active member of Delta Delta Delta sorority, pay for friends. I pay for my rent, utilities, food and expenses anyone would pay to throw one of those designated parties.

My freshman year in Tri Delta was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. The older members became my mentors and friends. Although I have made valuable friendships, I, as well as other greek women, would be able to make friends without the greek system’s help.

A sorority is a way to be involved, to be a leader and to make college the best experience possible. I am, along with my house, organizing an event to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital – an organization that provides medical care for children who have cancer.

As a friend and sister of mine told me in response to the common misjudgment that we pay for our friends, “If I am paying for my friends, then I am not paying nearly enough.”
