Editor, Daily Nexus,

By now everyone should know that the rumors about a military draft are completely without substance; however, the truth always bears repeating. There are no plans from this administration to reinstitute the draft.

The inspiration for this misinformation was largely two bills – one in the Senate sponsored by Sen. Fritz Hollings (D-S.C.) and one in the House sponsored by Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) – that have not moved anywhere and do not have any Republican support. The bills might be serious or might just be political maneuvering to inspire election-season rumors.

Before the election to be supervisor, I was a civilian aide to the Secretary of the Army. This gave me insight into Army policy, which is to inspire volunteers who will spend three years in the service. There are many for whom this is a very good career path and who will volunteer. The Army does not want two-year draftees who are reluctant to serve. The Army has no plans for, nor does it want, a draft.

There are important issues for discussion before the November election, but the draft just is not one of them.
