A student suffered a minor stab wound to the leg last week after he confronted two men who were allegedly sexually assaulting his girlfriend at the corner of Camino Corto and Pasado Road.

On May 12 at about 1 a.m., according to police reports, Luis Jimenez-Trejo, 20, intervened when he observed two men grope his 21-year-old girlfriend from behind as she walked to meet him on the 6800 block of Pasado. When he confronted the alleged attackers, one of them, later identified as 18-year-old Sal Garcia, allegedly pulled out a knife and chased him.

According to police reports, Jimenez-Trejo tripped and fell into the street on the 6800 block of Pasado and Garcia jumped on him. A struggle ensued, leaving Jimenez-Trejo with a half-inch stab wound on his lower leg. His girlfriend was not injured.

Garcia and his alleged accomplice, Fernando Diaz, 21, fled the scene when a friend of Jimenez-Trejo approached.

During their investigation, sheriff’s detectives developed information leading them to Garcia’s Isla Vista residence. Isla Vista Foot Patrol officers arrested Garcia on May 13 on charges of assault with a deadly weapon; his bail was set at $20,000. Diaz was not arrested, but police said he will be charged with sexual assault.
