With county elections accompanying the California primary election today, candidates for 3rd District supervisor are scrambling for last-minute votes.

In Santa Barbara County, John Buttny, Brooks Firestone, Slick Gardner and Steve Pappas are running for 3rd District supervisor. The 3rd District includes Isla Vista, Buellton and Solvang. The large number of student voters in Isla Vista has been a source of controversy in past elections. Firestone’s campaign manager Ken Poole said much of Firestone’s focus has been on student voters.

“Brooks is campaigning down to the wire,” Poole said. “His last-minute focus is on I.V.”

Gardner said he will spend election day visiting the election headquarters and parties of the other three candidates.

“I’m going to do something different, I’m going to get along,” Gardner said. “It’s going to be very interesting to see how it comes out.”

Santa Barbara County voters will also elect two other supervisors. Salud Carbajal and John Gostovich are running for 1st District supervisor, which includes Carpinteria and Santa Barbara. Carbajal is the executive staff aide for current 1st District Supervisor Naomi Schwartz. Gostovich is a resident of Carpinteria and owns an avocado ranch.

Incumbent 4th District Supervisor Joni Gray is running against Gerry Niesen, a retired computer engineer from Lompoc. The 4th District includes Santa Maria and Lompoc.

In addition to the Democratic primary candidates, California residents will vote on Proposition 55, a $12.3 billion bond for public schools, and Prop 56, an amendment to the state constitution which would require a simple majority vote rather than a two-thirds majority to pass budget-related bills. Prop 57, which calls for $15 billion in bonds to pay off state debt, and Prop 58, a California constitutional amendment that would prevent future governors from requesting more money than what is available in the General Fund, will also be on the ballot.
