Isla Vista residents who neglected to lock all doors and windows had some surprise visits this past week.
On Nov. 4, Bailey Bernard noticed that his laptop computer and cell phone charger were missing from his residence on the 6600 block of Del Playa Drive.
Bernard told Isla Vista Foot Patrol officers he locked his bedroom door when he left for the night, but the sliding glass door of his bedroom was unlocked. Before he left, Bernard allegedly covered his laptop and placed it under the sleeping area of his room. This area is behind a beaded curtain and has a black sheet draped over it, so it is well out of sight, Bernard said.
Bernard told officers some of his roommates had guests for the night who might have broken into his room. The investigation is still pending.
On Nov. 4, Joshua Miller reported a burglary in his residence on the 6500 block of Seville Road. The thief took Miller’s laptop computer from the coffee table and a backpack full of books from a desk.
Miller and his roommate were certain all the windows in the apartment were locked, but neither was sure if the front door was locked.
No suspects have been named in the burglary.
On Nov. 4, a serviceman for WEB Multi-Family Laundry Systems reported a laundry machine burglary at the Fiji fraternity house at 765 Embarcadero Del Norte.
The coin vault of one of the machines had been broken open and was lying on top of the washer. Approximately $300 in quarters was missing from the machine.
The serviceman said he contacted some members of the frat, but they did not know when the incident had happened or who was responsible.
On Nov. 7, a resident of the 6500 block of Seville Road reported that her laptop computer was stolen from her apartment.
Mary Beiler told officers that she left her apartment with her roommate Friday evening. Beiler went to the library and her roommate went to a friend’s house for the night.
When she arrived home from the library, Beiler said she noticed her laptop, valued at $1,200, was missing from the coffee table and the screen had been removed from the kitchen window.
When she left, Beiler said the power cord and ethernet card had been plugged into the laptop. When she returned, these items were still on the coffee table, even though the laptop was gone and could not run without them.
Currently, there are no suspects in this case.
On Saturday Nov. 8, Yani Andrianos reported a burglary at his apartment on the 6700 block of Estero Road.
The burglar took an Xbox game system, five DVDs and five Nintendo GameCube video games. Andrianos told officers he locked the front door when he left with his roommates for the evening. When he came back, he noticed that the living room window was wide open and the screen was missing.
There are no suspects in this case.
