The way I understand it, The Matrix is a movie about a world where everyone’s thoughts and actions are controlled by a giant illusion-generating machine. They can’t escape because for them, fiction is more powerful than reality.

That would be awful. I mean, imagine if we lived in a country where thousands of people felt compelled to sit in dark rooms watching some outlandish fantasy projected up onto a huge screen to satisfy their need for escapism.

That would be horrible. The only thing worse would be if they made you pay $10 for the experience.
