A man suspected of stealing a new Volkswagen Beetle found out Tuesday that the middle of a campus lawn may not be the best place to hide.

UC Police Dept. officers contacted the man – who appeared to be in his mid-40s – upon observing a vehicle parked in the grass across from the Student Health building shortly after 3 p.m. The suspect was arrested on suspicion of possession of a stolen vehicle and possession of stolen goods. The vehicle contained several pieces of unopened mail that did not belong to the suspect, UCPD sergeant Mark Vellekamp said.

The man had a bandage on his right forearm and complained loudly while being handcuffed that the arm was “fractured.” Vellekamp said the suspect was cooperative otherwise and would be taken to Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital to be checked out, then booked at Santa Barbara County Jail.
