Editor, Daily Nexus,

I, as a member of the UCSB Clerical Union (C.U.E.), agree with much of what was said by Christina M. Dauenhauer (“Your Fair Market Value: Workers Should Think Twice Before They Join a Union”, Daily Nexus, Oct. 16, 2002). We do have the choice to work elsewhere for higher pay. I would like to clarify, however, that members of the clerical union at UCSB do not have a choice about being a member of the union. By accepting a position here we are forced to be in the union and to pay dues each month, and must pay additional dues to become an actual voting member.
