The University of California at Berkeley suspended a male sexuality class after The Daily Californian, the student newspaper, reported that students in the class had an orgy and visited a strip club where they watched one of their instructors have sex on stage.

After the story broke Friday, Caren Kaplan, Women’s Studies Dept. chair at Berkeley, called a meeting with the student instructors of both the male and female sexuality classes. The instructors of the male sexuality class did not show up to the meeting. As a result, the university suspended the class pending an investigation to be led by Kaplan, who is also the faculty sponsor for the course.

The female sexuality class is also under review but has not been suspended.

Students designed both courses, offered through the Women’s Studies Dept., in order to provide safer sex information and a forum to discuss issues related to their sexuality. Topics covered in class include pornography, violence and sexual fantasies.

The sexuality classes are part of a group of student-initiated classes known as Democratic Education at Cal, or De-Cal. Although they are not funded through the UC, De-Cal units count toward graduation and the classes have full access to university property, such as lecture halls and classrooms.

UCSB sociology professor John Baldwin, who co-teaches human sexuality at UCSB with his wife Janice Baldwin, said both students and professors should be careful to not let situations such as the orgy occur lest “radical, right-wing conservatives” shut down all sexuality classes.

“This has happened before,” he said. “My wife and I try very, very hard to run a responsible class based on hard science and research.”
