UC Santa Barbara has appointed Kirsten Deshler, the university’s governmental relations director, to be its representative to the Isla Vista Community Services District following the resignation of former representative George Thurlow last December.

Deshler, who was appointed to the position by UCSB Chancellor Henry T. Yang, was sworn in at the Isla Vista Community Services District’s (I.V. CSD) Jan. 12 meeting

Deshler declined to speak with the Nexus about her appointment to the I.V. CSD — deferring to UCSB spokesperson Andrea Estrada — but offered the following statement: “I am looking forward to working on the Board on important issues facing the Isla Vista community.”

Estrada said Deshler’s experience in governmental relations makes her well suited for the position.

“As the campus’s director of governmental relations, Kirsten has deep knowledge of local issues,” Estrada said in a statement to the Nexus.

“Additionally, she has strong ties with local elected officials in Isla Vista, the City of Goleta, the City of Santa Barbara and Santa Barbara County, as well as with people throughout the greater Santa Barbara community,” Estrada continued. “These make her well positioned to represent the university in matters related to the CSD.”
