A UC Santa Barbara alumnus and Redwood City resident died Monday after a confrontation at his residence with Redwood City police officers. He was 33 years old.

Police were initially called to the residence of the alumnus, Kyle Hart, around 8:30 a.m. after a woman who identified herself as his wife called 911. She said her husband “was attempting to commit suicide by cutting his throat and wrists,” according to a press release sent out by the Redwood City police department.

The police officers arrived at the residence and found her in the front yard, “covered in blood.” They then entered the backyard and found Hart in possession of a butcher knife.

The officers tried get him to drop the knife, but he refused and rushed towards the officers. One officer used a TASER, but “the application of the TASER was not successful,” the press release stated. The second officer then “utilize[d] a firearm to stop the male from advancing.”

Hart was transported to a local hospital for treatment. He was pronounced dead at 9:30 a.m., according to the press release.

The San Mateo County District Attorney’s office is currently investigating the shooting.

Hart was awarded a B.A. in Dramatic Art from UCSB in 2008 and his Masters in Education in 2010, according to UCSB student verification logs.

He taught English and social studies at Frank S. Greene Middle School in Palo Alto, Mercury News reported.

Hart was the father of two young children – a two-year-old son and a five-day-old daughter – according to the family’s GoFundMe. The campaign has raised over $140,000 as of Wednesday afternoon.
