BIKO GARAGE
The Multicultural Center is hosting its quarterly open mic night at Biko Garage in Isla Vista on March 1 from 6 – 9 p.m. The event, “Honor the Scorned: An Evening of Self-Expression with Eve Moreno,” will include spoken word, poetry, music and dance. Eve Moreno is a transfemme and queer multimedia artist whose work highlights transgender and queer communities of color through performance and art. Biko Garage is located at 6612 Sueno Rd.

FLASHBACK

Craving some of those sweet 80s and 90s teen flicks? Magic Lantern Films will be screening four classics this week at the I.V. Theater. Viewers can watch “Mean Girls” and “Clueless” on Friday, March 1 starting at 7 p.m. Friday night’s event will be winter themed and there will be a photo booth, dance competition and free snacks. “The Breakfast Club” and “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” will be screened on Monday, March 5 at 7 p.m. The theme of the night’s event will be Slumber Party, so come out in your pjs and get ready for teen movie trivia. Tickets are $4.

WEEKLY VEGAN GRUB

A local group called Food Not Bombs will serve free vegan food at 5 p.m. on Sunday in Little Acorn Park (next to Bagel Cafe). Food Not Bombs is a large organization that spans the country and is a form of “franchise activism.” They believe that corporate and government priorities are skewed and allow hunger despite the abundance of food and food waste. Those interested in cooking can email organizers at foodnotbombsislavista@gmail.com. The dinner is regularly held every Sunday.

MINDFULNESS

Mindful Heart Programs will be hosting free meditation sessions on Monday, March 5 from 7 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. The sessions will continue every Monday until June 19 and will include a short dharma talk and guided meditation. The sessions are held at St. Michael’s University Church at 6586 Picasso Rd. in I.V.

DEFEND YOURSELF

The Associated Students Commission on Student Wellbeing is hosting a self-defense class on Tuesday, March. 6 at 5 p.m. Participants will learn proper striking and kicking skills and will have the chance to feel the burn with strength and circuit training. The class will be taught by Santa Barbara Krav Maga, and participants can cool down afterwards with free Blenders smoothies.

DELTOPIA PREP

Deltopia is right around the corner and the Isla Vista Community Services District is inviting the community to discuss the Spring Quarter dayger and how to stay safe. The local government also hopes to plan the long-term vision for Deltopia and other community events at the meeting. The town hall will occur on Tuesday, March 6 from 6 – 8 p.m. at the I.V. Community Center.

CAN YOU DIG IT?

The Isla Vista Food Cooperative and UC Santa Barbara’s Department of Public Worms is hosting a home gardening and composting workshop for those interested in all things green on March 7 from 12 – 1 p.m. Attendees will learn how to grow healthy plants and use the space in their home most efficiently. The workshop will be taught by staff from the Department of Public Worms and Oscar Carmona, owner of Healing Grounds nursery. All attendees will also get free goodies, including seedlings, composting tools and snacks (because it is the co-op, after all).
