A male victim died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on the UC Santa Barbara campus Thursday, police reported.

The UC Police Department responded to a report of a single gunshot near Parking Structure 22 at approximately 10:30 p.m. on Thursday. The building is located adjacent to Pardall Tunnel.

Officers found an unresponsive male in a white vehicle in the parking lot. He had a handgun in his vehicle and appeared to have a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, UCPD Chief Dustin Olson said.

Officers administered first aid to the victim until paramedics transported him to the hospital, police said.

Oscar Novoa, a 28-year-old Santa Maria resident, died in the hospital. Olson said Novoa is not affiliated with UCSB.

UCPD does not currently suspect foul play and the incident is under investigation by UCPD and the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office.
