With Instagram at your fingertips, it’s easy to get carried away with artsy filters, but it’s best to keep your photo’s colors as natural as possible. In other words, don’t turn a beautifully delicious dish into an unrecognizable Lo-Fi image.

The easiest way to make sure your photo’s color is going in the right direction is to make sure your white balance is on point. Check your camera settings and ensure they are set on auto white balance (AWB). AWB figures out for you if a scene is particularly warm or cool and adjusts accordingly. Sometimes your phone camera isn’t perfect, so if you still end up with a weirdly blue or yellow-orange image, you can adjust in Instagram or any other photo editing app. For Instagram, simply adjust the temperature!

Getting the perfect color head-on isn’t always easy so if all else fails, choose black and white.
