The UCSB track and field team headed out this past week for an interesting set of events which included both the Mt. SAC Invitational on Wednesday and Thursday, and the Bryan Clay Invitational on Friday.

Hundreds of different schools and individual athletes made the trip down to Azusa, CA for the Bryan Clay Invitational and the Mt. SAC Invitational in Walnut, CA making these meets the most competitive that Santa Barbara has seen this season.

Although the Gauchos were unable to steal away any first place marks in the many events held, many athletes notched new personal records for themselves in both meets.

Junior Shyan Vaziri has done it again and this time he lands himself in UCSB history. In the 1500m race Vaziri received a time of 3:42.44, which now ranks first upon the all-time Santa Barbara record book over the 3:43.80 time set in 2007.

Senior Bryce Rausa showed his speed as well in both the 3000m steeplechase and the 800m race. In the steeplechase, Rausa notched a new record for himself with a time of 8:57.94, which placed him second overall. He took second in the 800m as well with another new personal best of 1:51.94, attempting to get National Qualification in his last year as a Gaucho.

In a usually unseen event, sophomore Bryan Guijarro showed his long distance skill when he competed in the 10k run. Breaking his old time by several seconds, he notched a time of 29:38.39, which is his fourth record that he has broken this season.

Another athlete that landed herself in Gaucho history was sophomore Tori Usgaard when she competed in the heptathlon. With help from her new personal best in the 100m hurdles event, Usgaard totaled out her points at 4,968, the third best performance in UCSB history.

Some other Gauchos that achieved lifetime bests this past week include freshman Denley Rodriguez in the shot put event (50’8), as well as sophomore Tori Tsolis who ran the 800m event in just 2:12.39.

The Gauchos will take some much needed time off this week before renewing the Blue-Green Rivalry when they visit Cal Poly on May 3.
